"Love Me Love Me Not" is an audio collage snapshot of my life the year after I graduated from college and found relationship in new and unexpected ways. I stayed in Bloomington, IN, where I went to school, but some friends moved away and some drifted away. I moved into a double and made a new magical friend in my neighbor, I jumped from one unrequited love to the next, and I made new friends through music. To explain where this series of songs falls in the timeline of my songwriting experience, it's important to share my beginnings. When I started writing songs regularly in my early teens, I always started with my voice and I would sound out the right chords on my acoustic guitar to support. This worked and I wrote songs I came to love sharing, but I felt tethered. Thinking I may have an easier time, I eventually transitioned to piano and used the same technique. Yes and no. Well, the year after college, I borrowed and then bought a Boss RC-30 loop station and it provided creative freedom to write songs solely with my voice and percussive elements. I felt so free. I would come home from work and sing / loop for hours. I would sing out all my feelings - joy, pain, excitement, uncertainty, anger, peace, etc. I began to record my sessions with my phone so that I could eventually create more complete versions of the songs I wrote. After compiling hundreds of voice memos, I began to appreciate the medium itself. I feel it captures the vulnerability of songwriting and creates a documentary like listening experience. While not all of these songs are loops, they are all voice memos recorded in the process of writing or workshopping songs and ideas. They all share a common thread - tenderness, candor, and a pinch of humor.
